Now we know who is eligible for the Iowa permit to carry weapons. Let’s find out about the permit.
The Iowa permit to carry weapons allows you to carry a “dangerous weapon”.
702.7 Dangerous Weapon
A “dangerous weapon” is any instrument or device designed primarily for use in inflicting death or injury upon a human being or animal, and which is capable of inflicting death upon a human being when used in the manner for which it was designed

Dangerous weapons include but are not limited to

  • Offensive Weapons
  • Pistol
  • Revolver
  • Other Firearm
  • Weapon directing an electric current   (Taser)
  • Dagger
  • Razor
  • Stiletto
  • Switchblade Knife
  • Knife having a blade exceeding 5 inches in length
The type of permit you will get will be the nonprofessional permit to carry weapons
724.7 NONPROFESSIONAL PERMIT TO CARRY WEAPONS
Any person who is not disqualified, who satisfies the training requirements, and who files an application in accordance with section 724.10 shall be issued a nonprofessional permit to carry weapons.
The permit shall be for a period of five years. And shall be valid throughout the state, except where the possession or carrying of a firearm is prohibited by state or federal law.

 Getting the permit

  • Go to the Sheriff’s Office in the county you reside in
  • Supply a copy of the certificate of completion from this course, which will be issued at the end of the course.
  • Bring your driver’s license
  • Fill out and sign the application for permit to carry weapons
The Sheriff upon receipt of the application will conduct a background check by obtaining criminal history data from the department of public safety which shall include an inquiry of the national instant criminal background system maintained by the FBI (federal bureau of investigation.)
This is also know as NICS check (National Instant Criminal Background System Check)

Law for Issuance of the Permit

The sheriff nor the commissioner of public safety shall require an applicant to provide information identifying a particular weapon in the application including the make, model, or serial number of the weapon or any ammunition used in that particular weapon. So, the sheriff can’t limit you to carrying a particular gun or ammo.
The Sheriff shall collect a fee of $50 for the permit.
Renewal permits or duplicate permits shall be issued for a fee of $25.
To be eligible for the renewal permit a person must complete a firearms safety training, within one year of expiration of their current permit and re-apply at least 30 days before their permit expires.
I offer a online renewal course that is $15, but you must have a current Iowa permit to carry weapons to take the class.
The sheriff or commissioner of public safety shall approve or deny an initial or renewal application submitted under this section within 30 days of receipt of the application. A person whose application for a permit under this chapter is denied may seek review of the denial.
The failure to approve or deny an initial or renewal application shall result in a decision of approval.

Suspension or revocation of permit to carry weapon

– An issuing officer who finds that a person issued a permit to carry weapons under this chapter has been arrested for a disqualifying offense or is the subject of proceedings that could lead to the person’s ineligibility for such permit may immediately suspend such permit. – Notify the permit holder of the suspension by personal service or certified mail
-If the suspension is based on an arrest or a proceeding that does not result in a disqualifying conviction or finding against the permit holder, the issuing officer shall immediately reinstate the permit upon receipt of proof of the matter’s final disposition.

Annual permit to acquire pistols or revolvers.

– The permit to acquire is built into your carry permit. – The annual permit to acquire pistols or revolvers shall authorize the permit holder to acquire one or more pistols or revolvers during the period that the permit remains valid.

Why 10-8?

10-8 is a police term for “ready to go” or “in service” being a police officer, I found 10-8 to be a fitting business name for a firearms training company. When you carry a gun whether; law enforcement, military, or armed citizen; you must be READY TO GO. You can’t walk around carrying a loaded gun and have your head in the sand! Having awareness and the proper mindset is as important to carrying your firearm.
