The Iowa permit to carry weapons allows you to carry a “dangerous weapon”.
702.7 Dangerous Weapon
A “dangerous weapon” is any instrument or device designed primarily for use in inflicting death or injury upon a human being or animal, and which is capable of inflicting death upon a human being when used in the manner for which it was designed

The type of permit you will get will be the nonprofessional permit to carry weapons
724.7 NONPROFESSIONAL PERMIT TO CARRY WEAPONS
Any person who is not disqualified, who satisfies the training requirements, and who files an application in accordance with section 724.10 shall be issued a nonprofessional permit to carry weapons.
The permit shall be for a period of five years. And shall be valid throughout the state, except where the possession or carrying of a firearm is prohibited by state or federal law.
Getting the permit

Go to the Sheriff’s Office in the county you reside in

Supply a copy of the certificate of completion from this course, which will be issued at the end of the course.
